You feel them before you see them: a few more horse trailers on the back roads, group chats suddenly planning outfits, a certain hum settling over Bridgehampton. Hampton Classic week is one of those weeks, and if you ask me, it's the real marker that summer is entering its final stretch.
Here's the thing worth knowing up front: you don't have to know anything about show jumping to love this week. That's not the point of it, or at least not the only point. Now in its 51st year, the Hampton Classic has become something bigger than the sport itself, a full week that pulls in shopping, food, family activities, and the particular pleasure of running into everyone you haven't seen since June, all under one set of gates.
What the Week Actually Feels Like
It's ribbons and rosé. It's the Agneta Currey Boutique Garden, roughly 80 shops set up specifically for wandering, worth losing an entire afternoon to. It's the Kids' Tent with pony rides and activities for the younger crowd, and food vendors tucked around every corner for when the wandering makes you hungry. If you've ever thought about adding a furry family member, Monday's Adoption Day brings rescue organizations right onto the grounds, dogs and cats in the pony ride area from 11am to 2pm, and adoptable horses in the Grand Prix Ring from 1:30 to 3pm.
And yes, there's also world-class show jumping happening in the main ring, including this year's $400,000 Longines Hampton Classic Grand Prix on the closing Sunday. But I'd argue the real draw is the atmosphere: the way the week gathers the whole East End in one place, the way it feels less like an event and more like a communal exhale before the season turns.
The Details
The Hampton Classic runs August 23rd through the 30th in Bridgehampton. Main gates open at 8am daily.
General admission is $25 per carload for parking, paid at the entrance or purchased in advance online (cash isn't accepted). Monday is free general admission for everyone, and it's also the best day to shop, before the weekend crowds arrive. Tuesday through Thursday, admission is free for seniors, veterans, and active military, or if you bring three or more non-perishable items for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry.
If you want to get closer to the ring, the Classic Club offers an elevated ringside lounge experience Thursday through Sunday, with food and soft drinks included (beer, wine, and cocktails available for purchase), priced between $200 and $600 per ticket depending on the day. Grand Prix Sunday (August 30th) is the one day reserved grandstand tickets are required, covering both the $70,000 2* Grand Prix at 10:30am and the $400,000 Longines Hampton Classic Grand Prix at 2pm. Every other day, grandstand seating is open to spectators at no extra charge.
Kids' activities and pony rides run throughout the week in the Kids' Tent, with a full day dedicated to them on Saturday ("Kids' Day"), including face painting, circus performers, and an all-day dance party. Food vendors are on site the entire week, from fast, casual stands to a full spectator food court.

I think what makes Hampton Classic week worth marking on your calendar isn't really about the horses. It's about what it represents: the last big, gathered moment of the season before the light starts to shift and everyone quietly starts talking about Labor Day. It's a week that asks for nothing more than showing up, wandering, and being around people. No expertise required, no dress code beyond "country casual" and comfortable shoes, no pressure to know what a Grand Prix actually is.
However you spend it, whether that's Grand Prix Sunday in the grandstands or just a Monday morning wandering the boutique tents with a coffee in hand, this is the week that reminds you summer isn't over yet. It's just getting good.
