The Pridwin, Shelter Island: Where to Go When the Hamptons Feels Like Too Much

There are Saturday nights in the Hamptons when the energy tips from fun into overwhelming. The restaurants are packed, the roads are backed up, and everyone seems to be chasing the same version of a good time.

This past weekend we started off thinking Montauk for date night. Then reality set in -- finding a decent dinner reservation on a Saturday in July felt close to impossible. The thought of fighting traffic, circling for parking, and hoping something decent was still available just wasn't it.

So we looked to Shelter Island instead.

We got a 7:45 reservation a few days out. Prime time, Saturday night, July. That alone tells you something.

The Sag Harbor to Shelter Island ferry is one of those things that feels like more of a journey than it actually is. It takes about five minutes. But something about crossing the water shifts the whole mood. By the time you pull off the boat, you're already somewhere quieter.

The Pridwin

The Pridwin sits right on Crescent Beach, and if you've never been, the porch is the whole point. It overlooks the water, there's live music on weekend evenings, and the light at golden hour is genuinely one of the better views on the East End.

We went on a Saturday night and it was exactly what we needed -- relaxed, unhurried, beautiful without trying too hard.

Worth noting: Sunset Beach is just down the road and has very much caught on with the masses at this point -- think Surf Lodge energy, louder, more of a scene. The Pridwin still flies a little under the radar. There's just enough liveliness to feel like a Saturday night out, without the performance that comes with it. (Granted, I'm super pregnant right now so my threshold for "lively enough" may be different than yours -- check back with me next summer.)

What to order: The lobster deviled eggs are not optional. Joe had the Mango Mango cocktail and is now fully obsessed -- it's become his Pridwin order. I opted for their Italian Spritz from the NA cocktail menu, which I was pleasantly surprised by. Their non-alcoholic options are actually thoughtful, which isn't always the case.

A few things worth knowing before you go:

As the sun sets, they light the fire pits on the property and bring out s'mores. It's one of those details that makes the whole evening feel considered rather than just transactional.

If you're going with family, Wednesday nights are their BBQ -- a really relaxed, low-key way to do Shelter Island with kids without having to think too hard about where to take everyone.

Getting There

The Sag Harbor Ferry runs regularly throughout the day and evening in season. It's a short ride, easy to do on a whim, and one of the more underrated parts of the experience. There's something about arriving by water that makes wherever you're going feel more intentional.

Why Shelter Island is a True Gem

Shelter Island doesn't get the same volume of attention as the rest of the East End, which is exactly why it works. It's close enough to feel accessible and far enough to feel like an escape. The Pridwin captures that balance really well -- it's a proper destination without any of the performance that can come with Hamptons dining.

If you've been looking for a place to send out-of-town guests, a low-key date night option, or just somewhere to land when the rest of the Hamptons feels like too much -- this is it.
