Our hydrangeas are in full bloom! I’m always torn between admiring them in our garden and bringing some blooms inside to enjoy around the house. They always seem to wilt quicker in a vase.
Well after some googling, I thought I’d try out a few tricks I discovered:
Place the stem into boiling water. Apparently there is a sap that forms and prevents water from getting to the blooms. So by giving them 30 seconds or so in boiling water, it helps melt & redistribute this sap so the blooms can get the hydration they need.
Crush the bottoms of the stems. This also allows more water to get to the blooms.
Trim older blooms first. I’m not sure the exact reason why, but older blooms last longer in a vase. A week + later, the younger. Blooms have begun to wilt but the older blooms are still looking perfect!
I’ve also heard dipping the clipped stems in allum powder helps too, but I have had a tricky time finding it believe it or not!
