A Family Escape to Block Island: Our Two-Day Itinerary + Travel Tips

Block Island might only be a short ferry ride from Montauk, but it feels like another world. Charming, walkable, and packed with classic New England summer vibes, it’s one of our favorite family getaways. On our most recent trip, we brought the kids along for the first time — and it was surprisingly easy. Here’s how we spent two days on Block Island, plus our best tips for making the most of your visit.

Getting There: The Ferry from Montauk

The easiest way to get to Block Island from the Hamptons is by ferry. The Viking Fleet: Montauk–Block Island ferry is passenger-only (no cars), which keeps the trip simple. You can bring bikes aboard, rent them once you arrive, or use the island’s plentiful cabs to get around. The ride is under two hours, and there’s only one return ferry to Montauk each day at 5pm sharp, so plan your itinerary with that in mind.

Where We Stayed: Block Island Beach House

We booked a two-bedroom suite at the Block Island Beach House (formerly the Surf Hotel), and it couldn’t have been better for families. The suite included a bunk room across from the pool — a huge hit with our kids, who jumped in before we’d even unpacked. The hotel’s central location meant we could walk to almost everything, which kept logistics easy and stress-free.

Day 1: Arrival, Beach Vibes, and Sunset Seafood

After the ferry and a quick pool dip, we headed straight to Ballard’s, the island’s most iconic beach bar. Think tables right on the sand, frozen drinks, lobster rolls, and live bands flipping between two stages. It’s lively, family-friendly during the day, and sets the tone for that carefree Block Island energy.

By sunset, we made our way to Deadeye Dick’s for dinner. The seafood was fresh, the view over the harbor was unbeatable, and it felt like one of those timeless summer evenings where you lose track of time. After a stroll through town, we ended the night back at our hotel, listening to live music with the ocean just beyond the stage.

Day 2: Animals, Harbors, and One Last Beach Swim

We started with a relaxed breakfast before heading to the 1661 Exotic Animal Farm, a free attraction that quickly became a highlight of the trip. The kids loved feeding camels, kangaroos, lemurs, llamas, and even giant tortoises — not something you’d expect to find on a New England island!

Back at the hotel, we spent a little time by the pool before walking to The Oar for lunch. With sweeping harbor views, seafood favorites, and their famous frozen mudslides, it’s a Block Island classic.

From the dock just below The Oar, we hopped on the harbor tour boat — only $2 per person. The short cruise offered a fun perspective on the island, complete with local stories and legends.

We wrapped up with one last swim at Crescent Beach, rinsed off in the hotel’s outdoor showers, and made it back in time for the 5pm ferry to Montauk.

Our Tips for Visiting Block Island

    •    Plan around the ferry: With only one return to Montauk each day, structure your time so you’re not rushed at the end.

    •    Skip the car: Everything is walkable from town if you choose a central hotel. Bikes and cabs are easy options for anything farther.

    •    Stay central: The Block Island Beach House puts you right in the middle of the action, with the added bonus of kid-friendly suites and a pool.

    •    Mix it up: Do a balance of high-energy stops like Ballard’s with slower moments like a harbor cruise or beach time.

    •    Don’t miss the animals: The 1661 Exotic Animal Farm is free, unexpected, and unforgettable with kids.

Why We Love Block Island

What sets Block Island apart is its pace. It has the classic East Coast summer feel — beach days, seafood dinners, and evenings with live music — but without the hustle that often defines Montauk. For families especially, it’s that blend of charm, ease, and just-enough adventure that makes two days here feel like a true escape.
